Memorial Day Weekend Vacation, Day 5

Day 5 of vacation was the end of our trip. We woke up, showered and checked out of our room at Otis. From there, we weren’t quite ready to head back home, so we decided to have lunch at Cooke’s one last time. We got to Cooke’s and saw they didn’t open for another hour. What better way to spend an hour waiting for lunch then at the Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory? Of course, we’ve gone on this tour many times, but Jason is now at the age where he can actually recognize things and somewhat appreciate them. We pointed out everything to Jason, and some of the workers waved and smiled. A couple of them, with gloved-hands of course, picked up a couple of chips and showed them to Jason through the window. He was so excited. At the end of the tour, you’re allowed to pick out 2 snack size bags of potato chips. We each took 2 and that gave us the chance to try all 3 new flavors. Our favorite was the new Buttermilk Ranch potato chips…..SOOOOO Yummy!!!!!!!!

From there, we were trying to waste another ½ hour, so we were thinking of taking the new Cape Cod Beer factory tour, but they’d prefer no one under 21 in there, so having Jason with us ix-nayed that idea. We ended up going to Shaw’s instead for a few things. Jay also ran into Lorena and Steve’s other daughter who was working there.

From Shaw’s, it was off to Cooke’s finally. After yet another super yummy lunch, it was time to hit the road and begin ending our vacation. We hit some rain and thunderstorms on the way to the ferry and had a smooth ferry ride back to Long Island….

So that’s our trip, day by day…….I can’t wait to go back up in September for a long weekend for Amy’s wedding and then again for our planned 10-day trip up there next Memorial Day weekend…….

Memorial Day Weekend Vacation, Day 4

Day 4 of vacation was Memorial Day.

We woke up a bit late, but still made it to the Memorial Day parade in Centerville and saw Jen’s son marching with the band in the parade.

After the parade was over, we headed over to Four Seas for some ice cream; luckily we got there way before the rest of the crowd did, so we were pretty much in and out. After that, we drove around for a little bit and went out for lunch at Craigville Pizza. We went inside and split a small pizza between the 3 of us; it was so incredibly yummy!

After lunch, we decided to take the rest of the afternoon easy before going to Matt’s parent’s house for a barbecue, so we went back to the room, where we watched some tv while Jason took a little nap.

On our way to Matt’s that evening, we stopped off at Jay’s old job, White Hen. He got to see his old manager and a few of his old “regulars”. They remembered Jay well, and they all talked for a few minutes and caught up with each other. After White Hen, we had a quick potty stop to make at the gas station down the road (too much water that day!!!!) and THEN it was off to Matt’s.

We got to Matt’s and the barbecue was huge; they offered us everything. Jason was only interested in the cake and the in-ground pool. Unfortunately, it was too chilly for the pool at that time, so we were lucky with that. He LOVED the cake though. Towards the end of the evening, Jenny came by and we got to know her a little better through both of our “how we met our husbands” conversation (both of us met our husband’s online!). After Matt’s, it was back to Otis for our last night and time to pack up. Luckily, Jason passed out on the way back to Otis and was out for the rest of the night, so I was able to pack up most of our stuff and have Jay re-load the car back up with no problem. Afterwards, we ended up with another relaxing evening of just watching tv together.

Memorial Day Weekend Vacation, Day 3

Wow, it's been a long time!!!! Time to update! I've had these posts written when the computer was down over the summer, but never ended up copying/pasting them....

Day 3 was also Jay’s 34th birthday! I asked Jay what he wanted to do for his birthday (besides opening gifts and going out to dinner!). His wish? To drive out to the rest of the Cape! We got a bit of a late start out and, by that time, it was just about time for lunch, so we stopped off in for lunch at Marathon, a little Greek burger joint. The food was great! We each had burgers and fries; Jay also got a cup of their super Clam Chowder too. After we left Marathon, it was off to the rest of the Cape…

Jay had wanted to go up to show us the lighthouse in Truro. Looking at the map, I realized we were VERY close to Provincetown at that point, so I convinced him to go to “the end” or Provincetown. We took a couple of rides through the town. I hadn’t been up that far since November 1988, so it was definitely awesome going back. I was even able to point out to him the motel my family had stayed at back then. We were debating climbing up the Pilgrim Monument, but by the time we reached the parking lot for the Monument parking, 1) Jason was fast asleep and 2) there was NO parking whatsoever. The Monument parking lot was jam packed. I was, however, able to get a couple of pictures of the Pilgrim Monument from the point of view of the parking lot.

A little while later, we did make it back down to Truro and to the lighthouse. We got out there to see the lighthouse and take a few pictures. What day trip would be complete without picking up a couple of souvenirs? We walked out of the gift shop with a book on the lighthouse, a couple of postcards and a stuffed lobster and “Good Night Cape Cod” book (pretty much the same idea as the Good Night Moon book) for Jason. Once we left Truro, it was back down to Hyannis for dinner.

On the way back to Hyannis, we drove by Jay’s parent’s old house to show Jason where Daddy grew up as a little boy. At that point, it was still just a tad too early for dinner, so we went into Yarmouth to one of the Christmas Tree Shops and to a tee-shirt outlet. Once that shopping trip was done, we were on our way to Barbyann’s. Right before we got to Barbyann’s, we heard a bunch of people honking their horns and looked ahead. There was a Cape Cod 4 Troops event going on in the K-Mart Shopping center, so we stopped by to see the military trucks and take a look around. Jay ended up walking away with a CC4T polo shirt.

Back in the car, we were finally off to Barbyann’s. They seated us right away, and once we got to the table, I went to the bathroom. As I was coming out, I saw our waitress and motioned to her to come by the bathroom. I whispered to her that it was Jay’s birthday, and my original plan of getting a few of his friends together with us hadn’t worked out, so I asked if she could bring a small special dessert out after dinner. She told me it wouldn’t be a problem at all. I had one of the BEST prime ribs, and Jay had a swordfish steak and dinner. Jason was SO cute, drinking out of a big boy cup with a straw. He was SO well behaved throughout dinner. After dinner, our awesome waitress took our plates and offered Jay a dessert menu. Jay picked the Boston Crème Pie, but they had none left, so he went with the Strawberry Shortcake. Of course, what dinner out would be complete without a cigarette break? LOL As he walked out, the waitress was coming out of the kitchen with the dessert and a candle already lit. I had to let her know that he went out and I’d signal when he came back. She kept peeking out at us and within a minute of him coming back in, we started hearing a few of the waiters and waitresses clapping and singing Happy Birthday. Now, there was another BIG birthday party going on upstairs, so Jay thought that the singing was for that person….until they came over to our table and put the strawberry shortcake in front of him. The staff wished him a happy birthday, he blew out the candle and the 3 of us dug in to the dessert. It was SO yummy!!! From Barybann’s, we went back to the room and enjoyed the rest of the evening together……

Vacation---Part 2

Ok, so on to Saturday........

On Saturday morning, we got our early wake-up call from the hotel Front Desk so we could get showered, dressed and out the door for our 2 hour drive down to New London, Connecticut to pick Jason up from my parents when they got off the ferry. We got down to about 20 minutes before the exit for New London when my mom called to tell us the Sea Jet was broken down and they'd have to take the larger ferry and not get in til 11:40. At this time, it was about 9am, so with about 2 1/2 hours to kill, we decided to get off at one of the last exits before New London for some breakfast. We had a really good breakfast at Friendly's in Stonington (I think that's the name of the town) and then off to New London to get Jason. The ferry was right on time, we got him right away and my parents ran to get the bus to Foxwoods.

After we left the ferry terminal, it was off to Cape Cod!!!

We got to Otis ANG base around 1:45pm, so we were there right before the check-in/out office closed. They got us our key and we got into our room and unpacked very quickly! We lounged around in the room for a few minutes and then called Jen to say that we were heading over to her house.

At Jen's, Jason got to play with Zachary while Jay looked at Jen's computer to see if he could get any wireless access with it. Unfortunately, there was only a very low spotty signal, so it'll have to wait til we get back up there in September. From Jen's, we headed over to Cooke's for dinner.
After we had our dinner, we went over to the Christmas Tree Shop in Hyannis by the Cape Cod Mall. We did quite a bit of shopping over there (including buying Jay and Jason a few birthday gifts) and we ran into Steve, Lorena and one of their daughters. After the Christmas Tree Shop, it was off to KMart to see if they had a CD Jen wanted. I was able to get a few more birthday gifts for Jay over at KMart (Boston Red Sox pajama pants, boxers and a jacket).

Once we left KMart, we headed back to Jen's to drop her off and then take a little drive thru Hyannis and Hyannisport. By the time we got back to Otis, Jason was sound asleep. We carried him into the room and put him to bed. Once he was tucked in, Jay and I relaxed with a beer and a movie (Titanic). By the end of the night, we were so tired from our busy day.

Up next post, Jay's birthday/Sunday......

Vacation---Part 1

I'm going to be breaking up our vacation under various "Parts" and work on one section per day over the next couple of days. So, here goes Part 1:

Friday, May 23rd....

Jay and I got the 8am ferry out of Port Jefferson, NY to Bridgeport, CT sans Jason (Jason joined us the next day in CT). From Bridgeport, we headed up to Hanscom Air Force Base (where we also gassed up the car at $3.89 a gallon....wooo hoooo!!!!), just outside of Boston. We went to the BX (where we got some souvenir gifts and 2 sets of ABU's and 1 pair of boots for Jay) and over to the commissary. I really started to feel nauseous while we were there, enough to not even touch my lunch. Before we left Hanscom, we called the hotel to see if our room was ready a bit early and luckily it was. Off to the Courtyard Marriott we went....

There were on and off rain showers, but by the time we reached the Marriott, the weather had cleared up. We checked in and Jay brought our bags up while I rested for about an hour. Around 3-ish we both started getting ready and were out the door by 3:30 for the Church Service. The wedding was absolutely beautiful; we ended up sitting with Amy, Tom, Sara and Andy. We got a little lost going from the Church to the reception (at White Cliffs) but then again, so did several others. Gotta love MapQuest directions!! LOL

Anyways, so off to the reception....We arrived there shortly before A, T, S and A got there. We sat together for the cocktail hour (fresh fruits, cheese and crackers and an open bar---yay!!) and then headed off to our table (15) with the group. After the introductions were made, meals went into full force.

The Food---Starting off was a glass of fruit salad (yummy yummy! Sorry, have to put a little Wiggles in there!). As soon as you were done with that, out came the dinner salad. Again, nothing short of yummy...it was a big salad! For the toast, there was no champagne.....there were glasses filled with a pinkish liquid. From the scent of it, Jay figured it was a cranberry blush wine. So yummy and sweet! Dinner was a choice of roast beef, chicken or pasta primavera. Jay and I both had chosen the Roast Beef and what a great choice that was! Wow, 3 very big cuts of roast beef that was so succulent!!! Sides were green beans almondine (green beans had a nice crunch, while the almonds were cooked to the point of no crunch---absolutely the best way ever to have that side dish!!!) and a generous helping of rice pilaf. After Matt and Jenny cut the cake, dessert was brought out (cake was later served, but by that time, most of us were way too full from the dinner and dessert). A hot whole apple with raisins covered in puff pastry and glazed with caramel and a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. WOW, is all I can say.

We ended up doing some dancing together and with Amy and Sarah. Watching my husband dance to 80s Madonna was.......very interesting, to say the least! LOL Matt and Jenny were nothing short of happy and the entire wedding from start to finish was just wonderful!

We had a lot of fun at the wedding but ended up heading back to the hotel a bit early, as we had planned on maybe getting a quick drink down at the bar and heading to bed. Of course, when we showed up, Andy yelled down to us from their room for us to stay up for a bit. We went upstairs to change and watch tv, and a few minutes later, Andy was knocking on our door. We went down to the lobby to see about having a couple of drinks, but the bar closed at 11pm (it was about 11:30pm when we went down). We ended up staying up and watching the Red Sox game on tv in the lobby and chilling out with Andy. Sometime before 1am, Matt, Jenny and everyone else started coming in. Jenny and Matt hung out with us for a bit and we ended up back upstairs around 1:30am (wake up call was coming at 7am!).

All in all, we had a great time with everybody. Unfortunately our time with Amy, Tom, Sara and Andy was short but it was still great seeing them....
